chewing on this. . .

July 23, 2008

For there to be healthy relationships you have to grow into an empathetic human being. You have to grow into a person who actually cares, understands and values the emotional impact of your choices, your actions and your words on the souls of other people.

Just because you have all the right language for spirituality, doesn’t mean that you have actually grown in empathy. Somewhere along the way we’ve concluded that spiritual maturity is about information, it’s about doctrine, it’s about knowledge, or about practices. But it’s not. All those things are important, but they are not the essential.

You can not understand yourself to be a spiritual mature human being and not have empathy because empathy is a by-product of intimacy with God.

When you begin to connect deeply to God, you begin to care deeply about people.  And no matter where you’ve been, who you are or what you come through, a part of what Jesus does in us, is He teaches us how to love. A part of the product of love is actually being aware of how your life affects other people.
